Project 2025, the Dangerous MAGA Plan to Take Away Our Freedoms, Is Even Worse Than You Think

What is Project 2025?: Project 2025, the Presidential Transition Project, is a plan for a transformation of the United States into an authoritarian state ruled by Donald Trump and his MAGA allies, both within and outside of the government. The plan was created by the Heritage Foundation and over 110 right-wing allies, many funded or founded by Charles Koch or Leonard Leo. It is backed by at least 170 MAGA loyalists who have worked for Donald Trump, including Stephen Miller, one of Trump’s top aides; Russ Vought, Trump’s former Director of OMB; and Paul Dans, Chief of Staff at OPM during the former Trump Administration.
Why should you be concerned: This is a plan to remove checks on the power of the president and weaponizes the executive branch for revenge and retribution. It increases restrictions on contraception and abortion, and makes large cuts to public education, Social Security, and Medicare benefits. It is similar to the playbook dictators and authoritarian governments have used repeatedly over the last century around the world.
Another Trump term would mean that this plan could proceed unopposed, on day one, of Trump’s second administration. The MAGA justices on the Supreme Court are already in the middle of a coup against this nation. They have ruled that the president has full immunity for so-called official acts, and have removed many regulations from large corporations and special interests. The plan makes the agenda quite clear: they aim to rule over us, rather than represent us.
What will Project 2025 do?:
Take away our freedom to control our own bodies
The religious beliefs of the few will be turned into the laws that govern all of us. Just like they took away our freedom to decide for ourselves whether and when to have kids in many states, Project 2025 will take the abortion pill mifepristone off the market nationally, removing our ability to make our own decisions about our bodies and our lives. Access to all contraception will be severely restricted, particularly targeting lower-income communities and anyone with health insurance through an employer. (Mandate for Leadership, p. 62)
Take away our freedom to learn
Eliminating the Department of Education and Title 1 funding for schools means defunding the promise of public schools to serve all students. (Mandate for Leadership, p. 350)
Federal education funding would be used for private, including private religious, school tuition or tutoring costs, decreasing public school budgets. (Mandate for Leadership, p. 350)
Take away our basic civil rights
Discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity will be enabled. (Mandate for Leadership, p. 584)
Employers will be able to fire people based on their moral or religious beliefs. (Mandate for Leadership, p. 586)
Adoption and foster care agencies will be able to refuse to work with anyone who does not share their religious beliefs. (Mandate for Leadership, p. 477)
Take away our freedom to work safely and fairly
Corporations will be allowed to stop paying workers overtime. (Mandate for Leadership, p. 492)
Child labor regulations/prohibitions will be removed, and corporations will be permitted to make children work dangerous jobs. (Mandate for Leadership, p. 595)
Take away our protections from losing our jobs for our political opinions
Tens of thousands of apolitical civil servants will be reclassified as “political appointees.” They will be stripped of labor protections and the president will be enabled to replace them based on any criteria, including their personal opinions on politics, demanding absolute loyalty to the MAGA movement. Trump, who refused to release Michael Cohen from prison because Cohen would not give up his first amendment rights, will be able to take this even further. (Mandate for Leadership, pp. 70-83)
Civil service workers will have to take biased and discriminatory tests about their ideology before being hired to ensure they are in lockstep with the MAGA agenda. (Mandate for Leadership, p. xiv)
Our freedoms are not guaranteed. If we want to keep them, we must fight for them against Trump, the MAGA justices, and their allies in the MAGA movement who are trying to take them away. The entire American experiment is at stake here. In 1787, when asked if the United States had the government of a monarchy or a republic, Benjamin Franklin famously replied, “A republic – if you can keep it.” Now is our chance to prove we can.
