📢 Freedom Over Fascism: True power rests with the people
🗽 Freedom is a daily act of advocacy and holding our leaders accountable to the will of the people.
As we embrace 2025, I want to share why I’m optimistic and hopeful for the year ahead. After living in Florida for over 30 years and witnessing the rise of hatred and bigotry, I understand the challenges we face in America. With Donald Trump and his minions taking power in 2025—MAGA extremists, radical Republicans, and even some Democrats willing to sell their souls for power—our rights, freedoms, and democracy will be tested. But here’s the truth: I have unwavering faith in the power of the people to meet this moment in history.
Let’s not lose sight of our tremendous strength. Almost 80% of people who call America home did not vote for Donald Trump (and let’s not forget that he lost the popular vote). Our power is not in the hands of politicians who seek to divide and conquer; it’s in the collective will, determination, and unity of everyday Americans who believe in liberty and justice for all. This is what gives me hope: the undeniable force of people power.
People power is the ability of individuals and communities to come together to create meaningful change, challenge injustice, and hold those in authority accountable.
Unlike the top-down power often wielded by Congress, the Supreme Court, parties like the Democratic Party or the Republican Party, non profit organizations beholding to the donor class, and other institutions, people power thrives in the hands of ordinary citizens who organize, advocate, and act. It is rooted in shared ideals like:
Everyone deserves dignity —with access to housing, healthcare, and education.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive — regardless of age, race, sex, sexual preference, preferred pronouns, religion, or employment status.
Everyone deserves safety—clean air and water, and communities free from gun violence.
It is also rooted in making an impact through action. This power isn’t confined to election cycles or political titles—it’s alive in our daily lives. Freedom is a daily act of advocacy. People Power is believing in the possibility of change and making change happen! In this community, we will always show up and speak out against racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, homophobia, misogyny, sexism, ageism, ableism, sizeism, elitism, transphobia, misogynoir, and bigotry!
History has shown us time and again that real change starts with the people. From the Civil Rights Movement to the fight for LGBTQIA+ equality, it wasn’t politicians who led the charge; it was people united by a common purpose, demanding justice and equality. This is the transformative power we hold—our ability to mobilize and push back against oppressive systems, to inspire policies that reflect our values, and to shape a future where everyone can thrive.
As we head into the new year, I am more confident than ever that people power will be the force that leads us forward. Together, we have the strength to overcome the challenges ahead and ensure that the voices of everyday Americans—not the wealthy elite or those who spread division—determine the course of our nation. Let’s use this power, stand united, and keep building a movement that ensures liberty and justice for all.

Hope
Hope is a powerful weapon against fascism, serving as both a shield and a rallying cry in the face of fear and oppression. While fascism thrives on division, despair, and apathy, hope inspires unity, action, and resilience. It fuels our belief in a better future, reminding us that change is possible when we come together with determination and courage. Hope empowers us to envision a society built on equality, justice, and freedom, motivating us to take meaningful steps to protect these values. By cultivating hope in our communities, we counteract the darkness of fascism with light, proving that love, solidarity, and persistence can overcome even the most daunting challenges.
Respect
Respect is a formidable weapon against fascism, countering its foundation of hatred and dehumanization with dignity and inclusivity. Fascism seeks to divide and conquer by pitting communities against one another, but respect bridges those divides, fostering empathy and understanding. When we listen to each other, honor diverse perspectives, and uphold the inherent worth of every individual, we dismantle the narratives that fuel authoritarian ideologies. Respect strengthens our resolve to protect the rights of all, reminding us that democracy thrives when we treat each other as equals. By leading with respect, we create a society where collaboration and compassion overpower fear and division, rendering fascism powerless in the face of unity.
Unity
Unity is one of the most powerful weapons against fascism, as it dismantles the divide-and-conquer tactics that authoritarian regimes rely on to maintain power. Fascism thrives on sowing division, exploiting differences, and isolating communities, but unity creates an unbreakable bond that transcends those divides. When people from all walks of life stand together, recognizing that an attack on one group is an attack on all, they form a collective force too strong to ignore. Unity amplifies our voices, strengthens our movements, and ensures that no one fights alone. It reminds us that our shared commitment to freedom, justice, and democracy is far greater than the fear and hate that fascism seeks to spread. Together, we can build a future where unity prevails, ensuring that democracy is not just defended but strengthened.
