Today in Freedom Over Fascism we’re featuring: November 28, 2025 news briefs, video briefs, and calls-to-action. Freedom is a daily act of advocacy and holding our leaders accountable to the will of the people.
Together we can advocate for Freedom Over Fascism:
When leaders escape accountability, it signals that power—not justice—rules, eroding trust, fueling corruption, and opening the door to authoritarianism. Billionaire-backed members of Congress, justices, and elites aren't serving the people—they’re scheming to suppress our voices, strip away our rights, and rule over us. But progress and power to the people is more than an idea; it’s a movement. By standing up, speaking out, and demanding dignity, opportunity, and justice for all, we can build an America that truly lives up to its promise.
Freedom Over Fascism - News Briefs
📣 Mark Kelly: call for troops to disobey illegal orders is ‘non-controversial’
Senator Mark Kelly defended his call for U.S. military personnel to refuse “illegal orders,” saying that reminding troops of that obligation is a basic affirmation of military law. His remarks followed intense backlash—including from the Pentagon—and a threat of investigation into whether he undermined military discipline. The dispute has sparked deeper questions about presidential authority, military obedience, and the role of elected officials in addressing constitutional threats. — The Guardian
📌 ICE is grabbing U.S. citizens, defying its own rules and the Constitution
Reports are coming out that expose immigration enforcement agents have unlawfully detained U.S. citizens, sometimes ignoring internal protocols and constitutional protections that should prevent such actions. These are systemic failures in verification and lack of oversight that allow these violations to occur, with agents using misidentification or flawed databases as justification. Civil-rights advocates warn that these practices undermine trust in federal agencies and put citizens at risk of arbitrary detention. — The Seattle Times
🎯 Rhode Island judge intervenes after ICE wrongfully detains high school Superior Court intern
Federal immigration officers incorrectly arrested a teenager who held a valid driver’s license and was a U.S. citizen, raising serious questions about the reliability of ICE’s targeting and custodial decision-making. Local officials say the teen was held for several hours despite attempts to prove citizenship, and the case has sparked internal and public calls for reform. The broader issue exposed is how minor errors or miscommunications can lead to gross violations of civil liberties, especially among vulnerable populations. — The Hill
🗳️ Turns Out Fighting Fascism Helps You Live Longer
A new study shows that older Americans who volunteer in democracy-related work — including election staffing, voter outreach, and civic engagement — experience significant improvements in mental and physical health. Researchers found heightened purpose, reduced loneliness, and greater overall well-being among retirees who engaged in this work during election cycles. The findings suggest that defending democracy may offer powerful personal benefits while strengthening the United States civic infrastructure. — Mother Jones
🌍Americans helping Ukrainian war effort call US peace plan a ‘betrayal by Trump’
US volunteers who have poured into Ukraine to help amid war are dismayed by Trump’s continuing pressures on Kyiv. Critics warn the plan disproportionately favors Moscow, potentially forcing Kyiv into concessions that undermine its sovereignty. The proposal has caused alarm among Ukrainian officials and Western diplomats who say it could reward aggression rather than deter it. — The Guardian
📺 Inside the $4 Billion Industry Built on America’s School Shooting Epidemic
A new documentary is out on HBO titled “Thoughts and Prayers” and it identifies the profits being made as opposed to the policy changes that could occur around ensuring safer communities free of gun violence. — Mother Jones
🎨 Artists respond to a cultural squeeze during the ‘Fall of Freedom’
NPR is reporting that more than 600 events across over 40 states took place during the “Fall of Freedom” protest weekend, where artists and cultural workers rallied to defend free expression and push back against rising authoritarianism in the United States. Participants pointed to grant cuts, staffing purges at major institutions, and growing censorship pressures as reasons for mobilizing. The movement brought together musicians, visual artists, theater groups, and everyday citizens, turning theaters, museums, public spaces and streets into sites of creative resistance. — NPR

How Project 2025 shifts the USA towards a fascist regime
Project 2025 is a blatant power grab designed to give extreme MAGA Republicans unchecked control. Donald Trump and his Republican allies plan to use it to criminalize abortion and those seeking asylum, attack the poor and middle class, and dismantle essential programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, SNAP, and veterans’ benefits.
Under Trump’s Project 2025, Republicans intend to impose a nationwide abortion ban and create a national registry to monitor women’s pregnancies and miscarriages. They even threaten to imprison doctors and nurses who provide essential care.
If enacted, Project 2025 would also gut the Affordable Care Act, leading to higher healthcare costs for everyone and a loss of protections for pre-existing conditions. Workers would lose their right to overtime pay, and middle-class families would face tax hikes—all while wealthy corporations receive new handouts.
Republicans’ Project 2025 includes a detailed plan to dismantle Social Security and Medicare as we know them. This means slashing benefits for seniors and allowing Big Pharma to charge exorbitant prices for medication.

How do we fight Fascism?
Hope
Hope is a powerful weapon against fascism, serving as both a shield and a rallying cry in the face of fear and oppression. While fascism thrives on division, despair, and apathy, hope inspires unity, action, and resilience. Hope empowers us to envision a society built on equality, justice, and freedom, motivating us to take meaningful steps to protect these values.
Respect
Respect is a formidable weapon against fascism, countering its foundation of hatred and dehumanization with dignity and inclusivity. By leading with respect, we create a society where collaboration and compassion overpower fear and division, rendering fascism powerless in the face of unity.
Unity
Unity is one of the most powerful weapons against fascism, as it dismantles the divide-and-conquer tactics that authoritarian regimes rely on to maintain power.
🗽The strength of a nation is not its ability to fight wars, but rather by its ability to prevent them. - Gene Roddenberry
Together, we can protect and empower those we love, champion our rights, freedoms, and democracy, hold our leaders accountable to the people's will, and inspire voters to make a meaningful difference.
